The lemming is a feisty rodent (the real ones, not the video game ones), about which there are lots of misconceptions. The most enduring one is about their tendency to jump from cliffs simply because the leader of the pack steers them towards it, the truth of which has been rigorously disputed by experts – but this phenomenon still inspired what is called the “lemming effect” in psychology, meaning that people sometimes exhibit certain behaviours just because the majority amongst their peers behave in that way.

What is indisputable, however, is that they are wonderful creatures that have been documented to stand up to predators many times their own size rather than running away, causing animals looking for an easy meal a fair bit of confusion.
