Once upon a time…

Not long after the Gods had sung this world into being. When the people walked the land much like all the other beings, living fully in the moment, at one with the cycles
 of day and night, life and death and the passing seasons and weather. The Gods began to see that the people did not fair as well as all the other creatures, lacking warm coats they were often cold, without fast running legs, claws or fangs, they struggled to find food and were often hungry.

So the Gods consulted with all the other beings of the world, the oceans and mountains, the rock, plant and animal beings and they all agreed to help the people out. The animals agreed that each would offer its unique gifts to one of the human people and some would offer their bodies as food from time to time. The plants also agreed to offer their bodies for food and medicine and all the beings agreed that they would help guide the people, so that they could live good lives.

But the Gods recognised that in order to benefit from this help, the people would need a special gift of their own and this is how the unique gift of the mind came into being.

The Gods could also see, that without help, this special gift might soon run away with itself. So they gave to all the peoples everywhere, sacred rituals designed to keep the mind in check. The Gods brought forth sacred places in the world where the people could listen to them and be reminded of their connection to the land and to their brothers and sisters the plants and animals.

In this time, when time itself was born, dragons and other creatures which would later become known as mythical were still present and free to move through this world. Dragon agreed to help the people by holding the secrets of how to live a good life, in case these treasures should ever be forgotten.

One last gift, perhaps the most precious of all, was granted to the people. This was the gift of Fire. Fire to provide light in the darkness, warmth in the cold and to guide the people in maintaining balance with the special gift of mind. Fire to be at the centre of their lives when they gathered to connect with each other and the world around them.

For many many cycles all was well, and with the help of Fire and the practices they had been given, the people maintained the balance essential to living good lives.

In spite of all these gifts, as time passed some of the people began to forget the need to maintain balance and with the help of the mind began to take more than they needed from the world. Greed, envy and jealousy were born and the people began to fight with each other and sought to protect themselves from the cycles of the world by accumulating more and more of the materials of the land and the lives of the plants and animals that had agreed to help them.

The soon to become mythical creatures were no longer safe in the world and so they moved to other worlds and waited, watching for a time when the people were ready and they could return. In what seemed like just a moment through the eyes of the Gods who looked over the world, it wasn’t long before the people had bought about an imbalance that threatened the very existence of the magnificent story the Gods had sung into being.

Balance had to be restored and the people reminded of their place among all the creatures of the world. A time of great turmoil and suffering arrived and the powers of wind, flood and Fire began to sweep away the imbalance the people had created. This was a time that would last for many cycles.

Eventually balance was restored and it is in this new time that our story begins.

While much of the world has been restored to balance, most of the people who remain have long forgotten the rituals and practices that had once helped them and are once again wandering, lost, cold and hungry.

A few throughout the world find their dreams haunted by glimpses of the gifts the Gods had given them and of the mythical creatures that held the secrets to living a good life.
