About This Game

Box Office Boss puts you in charge of your own movie studio. The studio will rise or fall on the back of your executive decisions. Make the next blockbuster, awards bait, or cult classic. Every path comes with its own rewards and sacrifices. Everybody thinks they could make a great movie, but do you have what it takes to turn that dream into box office success?

Script Management:

• View a list of owned scripts
• Purchase scripts from outside sources
• Select a script to produce
• Develop a script by selecting a writer and working on revisions
• Option material from other sources

Talent Management:

• Choose a director to work on the film
• Choose actors to cast in the film
• Select crews for the production
• Choose shooting locations, including options for a studio backlot or cheaper cities with trade-offs

Budgeting:

• Confirm the budget for the film, taking into account talent salaries, production costs, marketing expenses, and more

Production:

• Begin shooting the movie, managing production tasks such as scheduling and resource allocation
• Address chance cards that may pop up during production, such as weather events or equipment malfunctions
• Select post-production elements, such as editing, FX, SFX, and music composition
• Conduct test screenings to gather feedback and make changes to the film
• Decide whether to do reshoots or post-production changes

Marketing and Release:

• Choose a marketing strategy, such as advertising or social media campaigns
• Release the movie and await reviews and box office stats to come in

Performance Analysis:

• Analyze the movie’s reviews and box office stats to determine its success or failure, and adjust your strategy for future productions accordingly

What’s the gameplay like?

A mix of your favorite simulation games but with an emphasis on real-world decisions. Instead of arbitrary or vague choices, our goal is to make every decision point that we present as close as possible to ones actually made by studio executives.

How long does Box Office Boss take to complete?

The goal is for a complete game to take in the 4 – 5 hour range. Then you could try again with another studio.
